On a pass play, B25 holds A83 while the ball is in the air. The ball is not catchable by A83; however, if A83 had not been held, he most likely could have caught the ball. What's the call? Does the fact that A83 may have been in position to make the catch enter into the decision?

Generally on that play if the defender grabs the receiver and "holds" him, holding will be the call. If he goes through him or knocks him off his route, then pass interference will be the call. Regardless of the call, it will be a first down for Team A after the penalty.

Under NCAA, if in doubt, the pass is catchable. If receiver is held with ball in air, it's PI not holding.
