A game to remember (or forget)
Worked a 9 man football playoff game last night. The score ended up 75-54 and took 3:15 to play under NFHS rules. I'm curious what kinds of crazy games you have been involved with.

I worked a 47-40 game this year that had 7 touchdowns scored in the first quarter.

I have personally worked games with scores of:
66-54 82-46 (gamed stopped with 9:45 left due to losing coach not wanting to continue) Other games just this year in Kansas: 93-60 82-0 (possibly a halftime score) 70-8 (possibly a halftime score) 70-0 (possibly a halftime score) 68-0 (possibly a halftime score) another 68-0 (possibly a halftime score) 58-40 80-71 60-44 90-40 50-48 68-52 64-42 68-56 78-76 By the way, these are all 8-man games. I also worked a long game this year. It took about 3:05. There were no weather or injury delays. The half took only 20 minutes and the score was only 36-34. TV games can be long. |
Had a 76-31 game Friday, took right at 3hrs.
Also had a 72-48 two years ago. I think it was 21-0 before the losing team took their first offensive snap. |
Had one this year. The home team scored 3 TD's in the first 3:30 of the first quarter. It was 44-0 at the end of the first quarter and 86-0 at half. Game ended 86-6.
The visitors threw a backward pass toward the end of the game and the receiver dropped it. As a home player was scooping it up (definately would have scored) our HL blew his whistle and said the passes initial direction was forward. Otherwise it would have been 92-6. He caught some grief from us over that call. |
My first ever game as WH in our top league was a 53-49 shoot out with the winning score in the last 20 seconds.
Had a bowl game go to 4 periods of o/t. Had a 0-0 in a league that do not play o/t during the reg season. Sounds dull but actually wasn't, we had 6 missed FG attempts, 2 of which hit the posts. |

It's always reassuring to know there are other officials who probably enjoyed their cold postgame beverage as much as I did after that marathon !!!

Texas plays 6 man football. It can be pretty wide open and has a 45 point mercy rule after halftime. My first 6 man game, the KO was returned untouched for a TD. Game ended 61-0 at halftime. Last year I did a game where the winning team stayed ahead the whole game, but never could get 45 ahead. Final was something like 84-59 and it took over 3 hours.

JC game this year. 56-51, over 3 hours.
|
Had an 8-man game between a couple of deaf schools that the score was like 85-65 and took more than 3 1/2 hours because they had an extended halftime due to homecoming. Once sat through an 11-man game as a spectator (was watching a friend's crew work that night), that took about 3 1/2 hours, being a 65-50 (or something like that) game, with a bunch of the flags flying all over the place.

I had a JC game where the Visitors scored on the last play and kicked the PAT to win 56-55. The game took 5:20. Yes, it was at Palomar in the '1980s. There were 2 running plays combined, the whole game. |
Had a 58-45 game early this year....almost entirely passing. 3:20 if I'm not mistaken, plus an hour and a half drive to get there or back, to boot.

This year we had a JV game (10 minute quarters) in the pregame the visiting coach told us, "If we run the ball it was an accident."
They received the opening kickoff and punted after 3 incomplete passes with the punt returned for a touchdown at 9:41 on the clock... Insuing kickoff ran two plays, one of them complete and then threw an interception which was returned for a touchdown at 9:00 on the clock... Insuing kickoff two incomplete passes, a free first down on a roughing the passer penalty, three more incomplete passes and then a blocked punt. Home team took their first snap around the B19 and ran in for a touchdown at 8:21. NE uses a running clock when a team is ahead by 35 points in the second half. The game started at 6:30 and halftime was at 8:15. Got back in the car after the game at 9:30. Last game of the regular season was a 9th grade Tuesday afternoon thriller. 8 minute quarters, spent the entire 2nd quarter inside the 20 on one side of the field. Including 7 downs with a flag in a row. The game was under 2 hours, but the 2nd quarter was a real joy to work. |
Not about time, but I had a game end 0-1.
Who can figure that out? |
