PAT circus
Had a youth league game (Fed Rules) where the QB takes a snap on a PAT where he thinks he can run the last 13 seconds of the game out. He turns and runs the length of the field through his own end zone. Now, when it is apparent that a TRY is unsuccessful, the play is dead. But what happens when it becomes unsuccessful because the QB just ran through his own end zone?

Well, for one thing, there's still going to be 13 seconds on the clock. :)
8-3-2d The try begins when the ball is marked ready for play. It ends when: d. The ball becomes dead for any other reason. |
The QB just caused a safety and his team will be kicking from the 20 with 13 seconds left in the game.

i thought this would result in a one point safety. kick off from the 40 yard line.

I'm also assuming this would be a safety. His actions caused the ball to become dead in his own endzone.

NFHS: Team B cannot score points during a Team A try. The Try is an chance for Team A only to score 1 or 2 points. R. 8-3-3 That includes A running out of their EZ or B recovering the ball in A's EZ. No points for B.
However, if using the recommended NFHS tie breaking procedure, even though the ball is also dead when Team B secures possession on downs 1 thru 4; if A runs out of their EZ it is a 2pt safety or if B recovers the ball in A's EZ its a TD. Hope that helps Doc |
1) The try is unsuccessful.
2) KO from the 40. 3) The QB (and coach) are idiots! |

NCAA: 1 point safety in favor of Team B. However, Team A still kicks from the original line (30, unless displaced by penalty) and not the 20. It also has to be a place kick.
