PAT off rebounds off upright, JUCO game

Saw an interesting one at a junior college level game, glad to be sitting in the stands. Team attempts a PAT and the ball caroms off one of the uprights, lands in the end zone, B collects the ball and takes off running. He ran it back to midfield or so and the play was blown dead. Just wondering if this was the correct thing to do or if the ball was dead when it hit the ground. Would catching it in the air after it bounced off the upright make any difference? Thanks.

The goalpost, crossbar, and uprights are OOB. So you tell us.

That being the case, then a lot of people got a lot of exercise for no reason. Thanks.
