Illegal Substitution or Participation
After a change of posession, A runs onto the field with 12 players. There is no huddle and everyone lines up in a tight formation between the numbers. The extra player is lined up in a twins formation, one receiver on the line and one off. The snap in imminent, do I: A. Blow it dead at the snap, knowing there are 12 on the field and calling illegal substitution or B. Let the play happen with 12 and have illegal participation. The other factor in this is our state association has said that under no conditions should you let a play be run if you know there are 12 players on the field.
So... you make the call... |

I agree shut it down if you can before the snap if you count 12.

Shut it down immediately. The operative words are if you can.

I agree, shut it down. I actually had a coach compain (imagine that!) because we shut it down and only penalized the opponent 5 yards. He wanted us to let it go so he'd get 15 yards. |
Yes, shut it down if you can... however if you can't, still flag it and give them 15. It's not your problem.

Whether they huddle or not they still had an illegal substitution. "They can't break thehuddle with 12." Is a HS myth.

Ditto...if the association has made it clear that 12 man should not be allowed to start the play...end of story. Again it is tuff sometimes to get the count right if they are subbing and in hurry up mode. Jim

I had my first IP foul today. I felt bad that we didn't get it before the snap.
