I only read the rule and not the case study. I wish this was clearly stated in the rules and not in the case study.

This brings me to the definition of ramming. Where is ramming defined? Is ramming defined as leading with the face mask?

Spearing is clearly defined as leading with the crown of the player's helmet.

There is no ramming in NFHS. It is called butt blocking or face tackling. They both involve driving the front of the helmet into the opponent.

This is from the 2006 S&I guide published by the NFHS. The words frontal area and top are no loinger in the S&I caption although the same pictures are.



Butt Blocking in 1 and 2 and face tackling in 3 are both tactics which involve driving the face mask, frontal area or top of the helmet directly into an opponent in blocking or tackling respectively. both result in a foul for illegal helmet contact

NFHS Forum: I have never seen BUTT BLOCKING called.

I am in Texas. Texas and Mass do not follow NFHS rules. These two states follow NCAA football rules.

These players are protected by rules that have been in place for many years. It
is of the utmost importance that participants, coaches and game officials carefully
and diligently observe safety rules.
Intentional helmet-to-helmet contact is never legal, nor is any other blow
directed toward an opponent’s head. Flagrant offenders shall be disqualified.
