Umpire Equipment

What do you guys take onto the field that other positions don't carry?

For me it's another down indicator to mark field position and a towel. I saw a guy last year that took an air pressure gauge to check the balls. How common is this and how many of you carry one?

Along with a supply of Snickers bars, a small tape measure for the end of the 1st and 3rd periods.

My umpire carries a small notepad in which he writes slipups by our white hat, so he can share with us wings and backjudge at halftime for our humorous pleasure! :D

You remember the Southwest commercial where the referee is digging for a coin? A Johnny-on-the-spot Umpire would have bailed him out by producing a coin.

When I fill in at U, Before the crew leaves the lockerroom I will ask the R to show me his coin. One time last year a rookie R asked why. I told him would you rather find out here you do not have the coin or would you like to find out at the 50 yard line with 8 captains and 4 officials starring at you. Sure enough he left the coin in his gearbag. I still always carry one onto the field.

Always have the 2nd elastic "down marker" for ball position. Back in CNY, the home teams would provide towels for me. Down here they want us to bring one. I carry a small one for games even in dry conditions to wipe sweat off the ball and even let the center wipe his hands. If it is pouring rain, the home team better have some big towels. I'll keep the ball covered until the center comes over the ball. I worked a game back in Syracuse at SU's Coyne Field in a driving rainy cross wind. I had to hold onto the ball till the center came, or it would just blow to the sideline. One of those games where you wonder why you are out there !
BTW--this is my 40th season (8 in SW FL) and my last. Time to hang them up when this one is done.

Also, many umpires carry and extra down indicator to use for marking the previous spot.
