NFL overtime rules won't change [for 2009-2010]

They can say what they want, but from a financial standpoint, I bet they love quick overtime games. The TV networks must go nuts when the 1:00 game runs into the 4:00 game and the audience promised to the 4:00 game isn't there yet.

If that's the case, why'd they put in regular season OT to begin with? Yeah, I know, scared of competition from the WFL (which played 7:30 each way to break ties) for audience.

Because most fans hate a tie and feel cheated when there is not an outcome. Hockey used to have lots of ties, but came up with the abomination they call the "shootout" so they could quickly declare a "winner."

The only change I'd like to see is the sudden death not being used if the first team scores a field goal. Fine to end on a TD though. If the team kicks a FG the other team gets the ball and they have a chance to tie or win with a TD. If they do tie it up then it goes back to sudden death on any score.

If they want to settle more games in regulation play, they could eliminate 2 pt. tries, which are used much more to create ties than break them.
