2 officials hurt in Ohio HS game fight

http://www.daytondailynews.com/s/con...8spfight2.html

2 officials were hurt during the game between visiting Fairmont and Springfield last friday night. An ex-official (and friend) who attended, said that Springfld intercepted a ball mid field near their own bench, and that some play continued after the whistle was blown, which caused some Springfld bench players to rush the field. Seeing that, Fairmont players ran across the field to defend teammates. 1 Sprngfld player was ejected(helmet off and swinging it) and Sprngfld removed another player from the game.
Pictures in Sat and Sun papers show an official bending over, injured, saying he had been hit in the head.
Both schools AD's give statements to downplay their teams actions, with Sprngfld's AD saying (stupidly) that they will appeal the suspension...

Just to re-confirm: we're supposed to get out of the way and take down numbers, right?

Refster Mon Oct 13, 2008 01:33pm

I heard about this. But I heard that one of the officials went to the hospital. Can anyone verify?

JasonTX Mon Oct 13, 2008 01:52pm

If this happens in any of our games in Texas we are instructed to get clear out of the way and just start writing down numbers.

Memo to ADs. There's more to life than winning high school football games. Sports is one of the last bastions where sportsmanship, respect, fair play, and responsibility can and must be taught.

Don't appeal a suspension.

Teach your coaches and players about sportsmanship and that there are consequences to one's actions.

The adults' reactions made me more sick than the report of a fight.

Maybe Fed rules are different but in NCAA when you leave the bench you are ejected And of both benches emptied, how were there enough players to continue the game?

No disrespect to whomever worked this game but if one of us is injured as a result of this type of behavior, the game should be stopped. Everyone go home and let the "adults" figure out what to do about resuming the game at some later date.

Welpe Mon Oct 13, 2008 03:56pm

Mike, it's the same in Fed. It sounds like almost everyone should've been DQ'd.

DQ everyone, suspend the game, let the state deal with it.

Welpe, thank you for not writing "should of."

Your [sic] welcome! :D

Edit: Oops! Found a different error in my post however. I don't always pay enough attention to its vs. it's. :o

Exactly.

I'm pretty sure you can't appeal an ejection here in Ohio. Only thing that can be is eligibility issues. I was furious when I found out only one kid was ejected should of been a lot more.

Refster Tue Oct 21, 2008 09:48pm

Anyone know the final result of this?

TXMike Wed Oct 22, 2008 04:06am

Surprise, surprise, now it is being turned into a story about how the refs were at fault. This link includes video:

Yes you can. At least, I've heard of a case where an ejection was overturned.

I am guessing the school realized how easy they got it....

From Springfield News-Sun:

No suspension appeal; DePriest to miss game
Springfield High School, OHSAA deem case closed by mutual agreement.

SPRINGFIELD — The Ohio High School Athletic Association told Springfield High School on Tuesday, Oct. 14, it will not have a chance to appeal the one-game suspension of football player Trey DePriest after a fight between the Wildcats and Kettering Fairmont on Friday, Oct. 10.

In a press release, Springfield announced it has finished its investigation of the incident, and by mutual agreement with the OHSAA, the incident is closed.

"The official emphasized the ejection, and the fight were two different things," Springfield coach Rick Robertson said.

DePriest was ejected during the two-team scrum that erupted in the first half. Players from both teams ran onto the field. DePriest was the only player ejected.

After the fight, the teams were sent to their locker rooms. They returned after a delay, and Fairmont won 15-8 in double overtime.

The penalty for an ejection is an automatic one-game suspension. DePriest will miss the game at Beavercreek on Friday, Oct. 17.

Why aren't officials given better security. Imagine DQ-ing everyone--calling the game and having to walk through irate fans to get to your locker room and/or cars ? It is time we demand uniformed protection at all games. If college coaches can have state police etc. escorting them---officials should have a similar protection, at least local police or sheriffs.
We should demand nothing less.

Got to love those video cameras, I'm one who should know!

What should have occurred was a review of videos to suspend players coming off the bench. There is nothing to stop the OHSAA from doing that.

As for security, in our area it would cost money to have armed security so schools use teachers which is a perk for them. Before the highly publicized Kings Park-Sayville game my umpire and I joked about the security lady thinking the only thing she secured was a muffin in the lunch room. Sure enough at the end of the game she was our escort off the field until she got assistance from another teacher.

In retrospect, when the game got heated to the point where our safety came into question someone should have called police to provide for our safety.

If you mean that the state could have used video after the game was suspended in order to establish whether the teams had enough players to resume the game at a later date, then I agree.

The officials, however, could not have used video on the field to do the same, since OHSAA has a policy against the use of video.

My state mandates them. The uniformed officer is required to come to the field approximately fifteen minutes before kickoff and let the referee know his/her name and where he/she will be stationed during the game. They are to confirm where the officer will meet the crew as they leave the field at half and at the end of the game. Most schools make an announcement over the PA system to draw attention to the meeting and explain why the officer is there. We do appreciate the presence and I am not aware of any instance in football where an official has been accosted by a fan in several years. The state association makes annual reports of such incidents.

I think this requirement is also in effect for basketball, but no other sports.
