2 officials hurt in Ohio HS game fight

http://www.daytondailynews.com/s/con...8spfight2.html

2 officials were hurt during the game between visiting Fairmont and Springfield last friday night. An ex-official (and friend) who attended, said that Springfld intercepted a ball mid field near their own bench, and that some play continued after the whistle was blown, which caused some Springfld bench players to rush the field. Seeing that, Fairmont players ran across the field to defend teammates. 1 Sprngfld player was ejected(helmet off and swinging it) and Sprngfld removed another player from the game.
Pictures in Sat and Sun papers show an official bending over, injured, saying he had been hit in the head.
Both schools AD's give statements to downplay their teams actions, with Sprngfld's AD saying (stupidly) that they will appeal the suspension...

Just to re-confirm: we're supposed to get out of the way and take down numbers, right?

I heard about this. But I heard that one of the officials went to the hospital. Can anyone verify?

If this happens in any of our games in Texas we are instructed to get clear out of the way and just start writing down numbers.

Memo to ADs. There's more to life than winning high school football games. Sports is one of the last bastions where sportsmanship, respect, fair play, and responsibility can and must be taught.

Don't appeal a suspension.

Teach your coaches and players about sportsmanship and that there are consequences to one's actions.

The adults' reactions made me more sick than the report of a fight.

Maybe Fed rules are different but in NCAA when you leave the bench you are ejected And of both benches emptied, how were there enough players to continue the game?

No disrespect to whomever worked this game but if one of us is injured as a result of this type of behavior, the game should be stopped. Everyone go home and let the "adults" figure out what to do about resuming the game at some later date.

Mike, it's the same in Fed. It sounds like almost everyone should've been DQ'd.

DQ everyone, suspend the game, let the state deal with it.

Welpe, thank you for not writing "should of."

Your [sic] welcome! :D

Edit: Oops! Found a different error in my post however. I don't always pay enough attention to its vs. it's. :o

Exactly.

I'm pretty sure you can't appeal an ejection here in Ohio. Only thing that can be is eligibility issues. I was furious when I found out only one kid was ejected should of been a lot more.

Refster Tue Oct 21, 2008 09:48pm

Anyone know the final result of this?

Surprise, surprise, now it is being turned into a story about how the refs were at fault. This link includes video:

Typical...blame the authorities when things get completely out of hand.
