What penalties kill the play

Interesting question i had asked.

What penalties do we have that kill the play before it even starts?

I have my list but wait and see what you guys can throw out.

Thanks

Well, we have fouls that prevent the ball from becoming live (semantic, stickler point). :)

They're dead ball fouls. False start. Delay of game. Failure to wear mandatory player equipment just before snap. Illegal substitution. Encroachment. Snap infraction.

Are there others? I'll hang up and listen to your answer.

The only foul I can think of that would kill the play would be defensive face mask that causes the runner helmet to come off.

Wouldn't call this a penalty, but we had a streaker on the field last year, but it 'killed the play' before it started. Funniest thing I've ever seen on the field.

According to a recent thread here, I gather that in Fed a type of feigned substitution (hide-out play) would be retroactively ruled as having prevented the ball from being put in play, but in reality is whistled after the ball is put in play, as soon as it's determined that such a play was in progress.

sorry should add before the snap

Had someone ask what penalties do we call that kills the play before it starts.

Interesting but from a curious Friday night parent/fan. They said they had a bet with a friend one guy said there was only one and he thought he could only think of two.

Ones i came up with:

*false start on the offense

*encroachment on the defense

*illegal substitution (off or def)

*illegal snap/snap infraction (some may group that as false start)

*delay of game

*illegal equipment (i.e. mouth piece not in)

*unsportsmanlike penalty on player or non-player

Just running things thru mind so they may be more

Something we teach our flag football officials that are just beginning... (I run an intramural sports department):

Acronym F.I.E.L.D

False Start
Illegal Snap
Encroachment
Leaving the field improperly (Illegal Substitution)
Delay of Game

It's not all encompassing, but it does the basics.

NCAA has illegal signals from the defense (simulating the cadence of the O)

:D I assume it was an offensive penalty.
:D Did you flag him for backfield in motion?
:D Based on what you saw, was it a major or a minor foul?
:D Did he get a lot of inadvertent whistles?

Ok, I'll stop now....

CANADIAN FOULS:
  1. Illegal Procedure (Offense) - 3- and 4-point stance players moving/lifting before the snap.
  2. Offside (Defense) - crossing LS.
  3. Offside (Defense) - making contact with o-line.
  4. Offside (Offense) - WR embarassing himself going downfield early and rather far.
  5. Time Count (Offense) - taking longer than 20s to snap the ball after the RFP.
  6. IE/OC/UR/RP (Either) - if one of these happens before the snap, kill the play, assess the penalty.

Failure to wear proper equipment.
