If I've echoed the whistle, I've already turned to see where the ball carrier is at. I wear a lanyard whistle so I have a moment to find it before it gets blown. 14 years a whistle from the stands hasn't been an issue. Now that I say that it will probably happen this friday and I'll have to eat my whistle (or have my crew take it from me).

I think that you should try to be more vocal around the pile. Don't be afraid to talk to the players and do some preventative officiating. It will save you a ton of headaches in the long run. The players are less likely do something stupid if they hear your voice.
