BC vs VaTech

Who is reviewing the plays in the instant replay booth in this game, the Hokie Alumi Club?

jimpiano Thu Oct 25, 2007 10:15pm

Nice to see good teams play over bad calls

bobbybanaduck Thu Oct 25, 2007 10:18pm

i'd really would have liked to be a fly on the wall in the replay booth. the replay clearly showed he didn't have possession until the foot was off the ground. inexplicable.

And how did the two officials on the field determine it was a touchdown?

JugglingReferee Fri Oct 26, 2007 04:04am

It seems like its been a struggling year for NCAA officiating, if only by the seemingly vastly increased media reports of games with bad rulings.

I don't see 2 guys on the play. The call is all by the F.
Very tough play. The F gets driven back off the pylon but then has to make the call on the sideline with no help.

Now that sounds like an ignorant fan talking, not a ref. Just because you hear more about something from the media does not mean there is actually more of something. Often times it just means there is more coverage.

Take a closer look at BC's first TD. Was that receiver's toe not touching that line??? Sure would have liked to been in the replay booth on that call too! Sure looked like a makeup call

You apparently did not see the actual game.
The field judge never made any call until the Back Judge came over and gave his opinion. Then the touchdown signal was given. As you can see in the replay angles, the Back Judge is nowhere to be seen. The only official who had a decent look at the play was the replay guy. And it is tough to support his call.

I don't see the F looking towards where B would be plus I don't know what a B could offer on this anyway. The F had a good look at ball and hands. Only thing he would have trouble with is feet and sideline and nobody can help him as the L is dealing with crap on the QB and is too far away anyway.

Well, the Back Judge came over because the Field Judge was obviously looking for help. Try to get a replay of the entire sequence.

It only sounds like an ignorant fan. ;)

Besides, clearly the NCAA feels that the officiating needs to head in a different direction (not a vastly different direction, just some fine tuning perhaps), otherwise why would there be a need to look for a National Coordinator of College Football Officiating?

His/Her duties will include "...act in the best interest of college football and to further standardize and enhance the quality of college football officiating."

There is already a National Coordinator (Dave Parry). He is just retiring.

I don't see anything in the statement from the job announcement you quoted that admits NCAA officiating is "struggling"

No kidding. Good to know!

The article wasn't quoted to show the officaiting is struggling. It was quoted thinking that a different direction is needed.

TXMike Fri Oct 26, 2007 10:23am

You are reading way too much into that job announcement.

Texas Aggie Fri Oct 26, 2007 10:39am

Where is the line judge?

I don't feel that way at all.

When I learned about the post, I did not know that Parry was retiring and that the post was to fill his position. (If I am wrong to assume that when someone leaves a job, management often replaces that person with another person, please let me know.) Therefore, I thought the post was to fill the need for work desired to be done outside of Parry's mandate and time restraints.

Now that I know Parry is retiring, then the post makes sense, and that the post is to replace a current employee. If it's an apology you need for my misuderstanding, then I offer it.

Holding at the line of scrimmage and then follows the QB and defenders as they pile into the OOB area.

Watching the replay of teh game right now. I see what you mean. I would sure like to know what the heck they were talking about. I assume it was just the BJ confirming that the receiver had possession of the ball. BUt the F should have been able to see that with no help. Maybe it was the BJ asking the F to tell him what he had so he could help the F make the decision as to the final result?

I think that is where mechanics may have broken down. I think the LJ should have turned his attention to the pass and let the WH deal with the quarterback. But hey, I only get to watch these games on TV, so who am I to judge.

TXMike Fri Oct 26, 2007 02:50pm

He could not help on this. He was blocked by at least 2 defenders and a pylon

Patton Fri Oct 26, 2007 02:56pm

After watching it again, you're right, he probably wouldn't have had much to offer. If he would have turned to watch the pass, he may have been run down with everything coming his way.

cmathews Fri Oct 26, 2007 02:56pm

not always the case

The replay we see on TV and the replay that the guys in the booth see, are not always the same. There are times that the replay that shows the best angle don't always make it upstairs.

This crew needs to get rid of those finger whistles and flags hanging out of back pocket....sloppy signals because of finger whistle...sloppy appearance with flag hanging halfway out. ERR!

Lazyness is the cause of the sloppy signals, not the finger whistle...
