You don't want a compound fracture on your hands
Either for yourself or anyone else on the field. Had one last night. The leg was bent at about a 30-35 degree angle outward, but I didn't know it was compound until a partner told me. Fortunately, the paramedics did their work quickly and got him to the ER for surgery, I'm sure. On a side note, one coach fainted.
Tough night last night. |

Had a kid get a compound fracture in a JV game a few years back. He had the ball and was being pursued near B's 5 yard line when a defender got his arms around the runner's shoulders and pulled him down. As they fell the defender landed on the runner's legs. I was trailing the play and could hear the snap.
I immediately blew my whistle and when I turned to call the coach I saw that he was already hightailing it in our direction.

Three years ago we had 3 serious injuries/incidents in one Fr./JV night.
1. Two kids going all out for a loose ball on a k.o. and slam into each other helmet to helmet. One got up, the other was taken off on the backboard. 2. Broken Leg. 3. Epileptic seizure. Not only was it a rather tragic night, it was pretty d*** late when I got home! |

Seen it once, an eighth grader with the forearm at a 30 degree angle. It is not pretty.

Worst I've ever had was when I was a player in highschool.
R jumps for the pass and gets hit in the air, landing with the ball in his stomach. He landed on the point of the ball, and it buried itself up under his ribs breaking all the lower ribs and colapsing the lung. SCARY stuff. That was also the first and last game my mom (a nurse ) came to see me play in. She absolutley refused to take an interest in the game after seeing that. James |

Boy, what a week we had last week. The broken leg was on Tuesday. On Thursday, had 2 JV games that not only went on forever, but we had another leg injury (not as serious, thank God) that took some time to resolve. The, Saturday in my varsity game, had a light stinger to the team's best player (don't think it was terribly serious; I thought it might be a broken collarbone), plus had to eject 2 players late for extra curricular activity. Not to even mention the fact that it was, by far, the most humid conditions I've ever worked in.

Had one player go down with a knee injury, where his leg was locked in either a 80 degree angle or a 100 degree angle, depending on how you look at it. the ends of the knee joint were sitting next to each other, side to side, when the trainer was examining it.
