Personal Foul Question

Happened in a game I was watching and wanted the NFHS call. In overtime, Team A first and goal inside the five runs a play and is stopped for little or no gain. A personal foul is called after the ball is dead. Ruling on the field was as it was a dead ball PF, ball is placed half the distance and the down is now second down. It really seemed to mix up the team A coaches a bit as to the down. Team B eventually held. Quite a good game as Team B got out to a 40-10 lead before Team A tied it at 52. Thanks for your help with the explaination.

Unlike NCAA (you NCAA folk can help), there is no automatic first down for a PF in NFHS. If it was a dead ball foul, half the distance, stays 2nd down (since it was after the play).

It was the correct call in NF, and in NCAA it would have been a first down after the 1/2 distance penalty cuz all PF's carry an automatic first down.
