Overtime

Probably a simple question for the vets but I'll ask it anyway.

In overtime the defense intercepts and runs it back for a touchdown. Game over or dead ball on the interception?

One part of the rule book says if the defensive team gains possession the ball is dead immediately. Another part of the rule book says if the defensive team scores a touchdown or safety the game has ended.

Thanks...
Mark

The ball is dead as soon as the defense gains possession. They can't run it back.

The rule includes your second statement to cover really odd situations that may occur (such as a 99 yard fumble into the other endzone!). :)

NFHS: Dead as soon as the defense possesses the ball.

I think this rule should be changed to allow B to return a fumble or an interception.

CANADIAN RULING:

B celebrates, A doesn't. I think it's really dumb to say the play is dead.

As a whitehat, I resent that. :)

Tell the HL or the LJ to take the sprint. :D

Not all states use the NF model for overtime. So this question could easily vary based on what system you use. In some cases states use a similar system to the NCAA. It might be possible the defense can run back an interception where you live.

I was thinking the same thing. Me having to sprint 85 yards (or so) would not be a good thing and I would never get to the goal line first unless a lineman picked off the pass.

So NCAA the ball is not dead and the TD will end game?

NJ uses a 25-yard line OT procedure and the defense can score.

That would be correct for NCAA.

REPLY: Walt...our OT procedure is virtually identical to the NCAA procedure.

Being as I am not an NCAA official, nor do I work high school games in Texas or Massachusetts, I'll have to take your word for it. I do like our procedure and got a chance to work an OT game this past weekend.
