When to Start the clock

In searching the books I am having a tough time locating the exact rules and guidlines of when to start the clock after a penalty. In the past I have gong by what play had previously done. Example: A completes a play in bounds and the clock is running, on the next play A or B has a penalty-- After enforcing the penalty the clock starts on the ready for play. Is this a correct assuption or am I messed up. Would like the location in the book for guidance.

Check in the index at the back of the book. Look for "clock", then look for "starting and stopping." That's from memory, the actual wording is pretty close to that.

The question to ask yourself is this - why did we stop the clock? If you stopped the clock because you had a foul, you start on the ready. If the clock was stopped for another reason (incomplete), you start on the snap.

CANADIAN RULING:

Before the 3-minute warning: on the ready (except a Time Count, then on the snap).

After the 3-minute warning: on the snap.

Redding has a list called "Major clock stoppers":

1) Period ends

2)Charged/TV T.O.

3)Ball out of bounds

4)Fwd pass legal/illegal incomplete

5)New series awarded to B

6)New series after a legal kick

7) Score or TB

8)Attempt to consume time illegally

9)DOG

If ANY of the above occur during the down, regardless if other reasons to stop the clock (penalty) happen...the clock will start on the snap.

If you memorize the major clock stoppers you cant go wrong.
