Arena Football Formation Rules
Some friends and I have been discussing this rule as it pertains to the NIFL and AFL. The rule in question is whether or not a defensive back can be outside the shoulders of the 3 down defensive lineman if there is no offensive outside the shoulders of the 3 down offensive lineman. The question is can he float outside the "box" without being head up on an eligible receiver or must he be inside the box?
If anyone could help out, it would be appreciated. |
Yes a DB can line up outside of the "box" near the LOS and not be head up a receiver. However he can't rush the QB. They may do this in goal line defense but they don't do this in the middle of the field. If they do this there will only be two DB's trying to cover 3 receivers.

Thank you for your reply NickelDeuce.

Any link of rules differences?

I was unable to find anything online, on either the AFL website or the NIFL website. The AFL lists some rules, but they are more of a simplified edition for fans. The NIFL has a link, but it is no longer good.
