When your umpire SHOULD signal TD

So the Pats' first TD today was on their own fumble near the goal line. The ball went into a pile, squirted out into the end zone, and recovered by a Pats lineman. The umpire looked around for a sec and then went up. Seems to me that in this situation, he probably should. Comments?

My first reaction is yes since now he's the covering official for a loose ball play and not a running play. The challenge is he may not have seen how the ball ended up loose so it would be dangerous to signal TD if you don't know for certain it's still a live ball.

I'm just excited for the home town Colts and look forward to seeing them in Miami in two weeks!

Agreed, cuz as bisonlj said, he was the covering official on a loose ball play. This is totally different, and proper in that case.
