inadvertant whistle with psk foul

i heard of this situation and would like some feedback on this play. it is 4th down and team A punts, while the punt is in the air there is a hold on team B. the return man muffs the ball and the official blows his whistle. what should be done?

NCAA - The foul trumps the IW It is not a PSK situation as A still "has the ball" whne the down ends (when whistle blew). Enforce from prev spot.

Same for NFHS.

NF: If an inadvertant whistle occurs during a down in which a foul occurs prior to the inadvertant whistle, and the penalty is accepted, the IW is ignored.

In this case, there's no reason not to accept the penalty, since there is going to be a replay either way.

So we have a Team B in-flight holding foul. (Applied from Point of Possession (PP).)

Then an IW during a loose ball. Hopefully an official bagged the Point of Fumble.

Team A will accept the hold. Team B 1D/10 @ PP-10y.

What rulebook and what the heck is "Point of Possession" Never heard that one before

TXMike,

Juggling Referee is from Canada. Check out the first line of his posts, "Canadian ruling"

JugglingReferee Sat Nov 11, 2006 08:37pm

Yup - that's right. I qualify each post with "{lightbulb} Canadian Ruling" when I respond to the sitches that are posted here. Some times the applications are vastly different, other times they are the same.

If I post without the Canadian qualification, it means that I believe the content of my message applies to officiating in general.

Gotcha Just what we need, more confusion..... NCAA, NFHS, NFL, Maple Leaf

What's neat about football in Canada is that we have only two rules books. Amateur and professional.

NCAA-level athletes play by the same rules as 6 year olds.

I know, I know.... how can their games be the same? Well, they're not. Penalty applications are the same, but sure - some variance arises in philosophies. (And sillythings like length of quarter for high school and below.)

PS: TXMike, I've been doing this for liek 3 years now. ;)

Same kind of deal in Texas. All non-pro football uses NCAA rules (with minor changes)

what if K wants to accept the penalty? gwere is it enforced from?

Theisey Sun Nov 12, 2006 09:30am

It's enforced from the previous spot and that could be enough to get them a first down not necessarily a replay of the down.

Smiley Sun Nov 12, 2006 11:46am

Correct. I should have said its going back to the previous spot, either way.
