Silver Lining

Every cloud has a silver lining, so the saying goes.

With heavy rains predicted for the area on Saturday we've already been notified that our game is being postponed until Sunday. That move brings up a conflict as my regular referee is unavailable for Sunday's game. As a result I've been asked to wear the white hat.

I've had the chance to work as a referee in countless sub-varsity and youth contests but this will be my first with the varsity squad. I am cautiously optimistic that I am well prepared for this chance. Part of that optimism is due in fact to the exchange of ideas and experiences we enjoy on this board.

Wish me luck.

Relax, have a good pregame, have fun, and oh yeah don't forget the coin!

Is this an interscholastic game?

Here I am, fresh of my first game as referee and I'm happy to say, "Nobody got hurt".

The smartest thing I did before the game was line up a veteran umpire, who is also our chapter rules interpreter, to keep an eye on me. It was reassuring to know that if I suffered from a brain cramp he'd be there to point me in the right direction. I'm also happy to say that the brain cramp never occurred but just his demeanor and positive encouragement helped immensely. The rest of the crew is very solid too so there was little that needed to be addressed during the pregame and most of what was talked about was for my benefit.

The game almost officiated itself and I was happy enough during the coin toss that I remembered to signal that the team that won the toss deferred. There were very few penalties and the winning team was in control from start to finish. It was also extremely windy so the passing attempts were kept to a minimum.

In all it was a very positive experience - one that I hope to repeat sometime soon. Thanks to everyone that offered their support. It was much appreciated. :D

I'll rephrase my question: What type of game was this?

LOL. Actually had no reason not to. About the craziest thing that happened was a roughing the snapper penalty that he threw on. We can discuss the details when I see you next.
