For all you WHs

1) do you give signals to both sides or just to the pressbox?

2) This is smaller question. If its 2nd/10, you have a long run but a BIB on the play. After walkoff you have a 1st down. Would you give the tomahawk first down chop?

2. yes a regular 1st down point, chop and wind if in bounds

I agree with BoBo.

Anytime the clock is to start on the RFP say after a penalty walk-off, I just hold the hand high, blow the whistle and wind the arm twice.

Both clock operators but more specifically the play-clock operator were instructed as to just what that means prior to game time.

I call it the first down signal, not the "tomahawk chop" so the NCAA won't label me "hostile and abusive." Of course, if I was Florida State, I could give the chop, dress a white guy up as a Native American and ride around on a horse with a spear and do the inane chant. Those things are ok according to the NCAA. But if you only have an Native American logo and nickname, you are "hostile and abusive."

I give the preliminary and final signal to the pressbox side only.

Preliminary signal, discuss with captains, clear from players towards the pressbox and give the final signal and verbal announcement as it is being walked off by the U. Our L holds the enforcement spot and our H is at the spot the U will end up at. The U will check with the H before placing the ball down. If the foul was not an automatic 1st down, but the penalty distance resulted in a first down, I will give the first down signal after the walkoff and wind the clock if it starts on the RFP.

I've always wondered- what's the point of the preliminary signal?

To let the coaches, announcer, and fans know the foul and then you will talk to the captains. The coaches will use the preliminary to often tell the captains accept or decline.

Ah, makes perfect sense now. See, i've been around football since 2nd grade, and your rarely know why some of these things are done until you try to get into officiating. Thanks!
