What do you wear to stay warm?

It's starting to get a little nippy outside. Who has some good ideas for staying warm?

BoomerSooner Sat Oct 14, 2006 12:58am

Fly south for the winter, stay indoors and light a fire, or snuggle with the one you love. :p

As far as while working, I think it depends on the type of cold. Usually the only one that really gets me is the evil north wind. I don't necessarily need to layer, but I do find that limiting exposure is helpful. Most cases I just go with whatever the rest of the crew is doing. As long as they don't get carried away and have us wear so much that I'm sweating before the kickoff I'm good to go.

And if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with!

But that's what I'm asking...what do you layer with? What items do you use?

UnderArmour Cold Gear. Stuff is the absolute best -- no need to layer when wearing this -- it's skin tight and has kept me warm enough on 30 degree days with wind chills in the teens.

RoyGardner Sat Oct 14, 2006 09:16am

Rich is right on. The Under Armour cold gear works so good it's almost magic. Have never had anything that works anywhere near as well.

MJT Sat Oct 14, 2006 12:28pm

Under Armour, with a long sleeve or 2 over the top if really cold and windy.

AndrewMcCarthy Sat Oct 14, 2006 03:00pm

I have both the Under Armour Cold Gear and Reebok NFL Equipment "Play Dry" mock turtlenecks. The Reebok is noticeably warmer. When I put it on in the locker room I always start sweating.

If you have an Under Armour warm weather shirt, I've had luck wearing that with black cotton t-shirts layered on top.

For wind and rain you can go to the golf section of the sporting goods store- they usually have some black gear that looks like it would be pretty effective.

27 degrees

This morning, 27 degrees with lots of wind: Underarmor Cold, turtleneck, sweatshirt, ref shirt. Gloves. A good time was had by all!

This is the first year I've used the Under Armor cold gear and I'm sold! I have found that it's only good though while you are active and moving. We finished our pre-game early last night and had to stand around for about 15 minutes. That got cold! Once we started though I warmed up quickly. I may try the t-shirt with it because that might help.

Under Armour makes three (or more) shirts you can wear for various degrees of warmth. The first, if its not THAT cold, but just a little nippy, is the turf gear shirt. This has no mock collar and does a decent job if what's cold is the wind. The next level is the all-season wear shirt that does have a mock collar and provides more warmth than the turf wear shirt. Finally, there's the mentioned cold gear with collar.

All I've worn with my long sleeved striped shirt is the turf gear shirt. I wore that twice last year but didn't work when really cold. If I do, I'll get the AS and CG shirts and decide which one at game time.

The ones you buy off the shelf have the white UA logo on the collar. If you don't want that, you can order the UA tactical line which blacks all that stuff out. I wear the tactical shirts (short sleeve) for basketball since they are the only ones that have a v-neck.

Get some "hot hands" and stick in your pockets, or your gloves, that will help a bit.

I think to use UnderArmour and then put a sleeveless sweater on top of that and then your referee shirt. The sweater does wonders to stop the wind.

I wear the Windstopper shirt under my jersey. Honig's has them. They are windproof, and nearly water proof. The Windstopper material will stick to your skin, so wear a t-shirt under it. Layering on top with turtleneck, sweater on those extra cold days/nights will help also. A friend of mine who skis regularly said I should wear silk underwear, which is sold at ski outlets everywhere. Apparently silk is great in cold, wet weather.

The trick in really cold weather is not to overdress, then perspire. Any moisture in your clothing will make you colder. Keep extra gear for halftime changes if necessary.

The Under Armor is on the way. I've always layered and layered. But I'm tired of feeling like the Michelin man!

Undearmour cold gear is great for most cold weather games. If you are still working in late November or early December, I add a long sleeve top made of silk over the armour and then put my weatherbeater referee shirt on. We had a game in early December last year that the temp. with wind chill was -10 and I was very comfortable.

HossHumard Mon Oct 16, 2006 05:00pm

"wind chill"?? -10?? Cold??

You guys are kiddin', eh?

mcrowder Tue Oct 17, 2006 08:23am

What are you people talking about?

I bought a long sleeve referee shirt my first year, and have not worn it once. What's this "wind chill" thing anyway?

:)

Snake~eyes Tue Oct 17, 2006 03:53pm

I ordered the long sleeve weather beater (not the striped shirt) and I wear that underneath whenever its brutal. Couldn't be happier. It also does extremely well against wet weather.

Ed Hickland Wed Oct 18, 2006 09:23am

UnderArmour Cold Gear is great for 55 degrees or less. It can get uncomfortable when the temperature rises especially with a warm sun beaming down upon you.

If it is windy add either a Windstopper pullover or a striped shirt with a Windstopper lining.

Turtlenecks are great for providing warmth around the neck but do not use them when it is raining because the collar will wick moisture inside your outer layer and make you cold and wet.

I tried the Under Armour gloves last year and they are great for those days when the hands get cold. They allow you to operate a watch as long as the button are good size.

Keep some Chap Stick or Blister some similar product in your bag to protect yourself from lip chap, especially, if you are a referee because you blow the whistle constantly.

Then pray for warm weather.

Texas Aggie Wed Oct 18, 2006 11:12pm

At 55 degrees with no wind, we are probably still in short sleeves, especially if the sun is still out. If there's wind, then we might go long, but I wouldn't wear actual UA cold gear unless its in the 30s, or low 40s with a stiff wind. That's where the other options I mentioned above come in handy.

Has anyone ever gone out as a crew in short sleeves and changed at halftime to long sleeves? In Texas, the weather can drop 30 degrees in literally minutes. It did today in less than 2 hours.
