Fair catch.....
R1 and R2 are back in position to make the catch R1 signals fair catch, and R2 catches the ball yards ahead of R1 where he catches (cleanly), gets hit and fumbles the kick, and K recovers. what do we have?

Ball is dead once the ball is caught by R. Unless the hit if a personal foul, you got nothing. It will be R's ball, 1 and 10.

Agree with Grant's reply. Just want to add that it is not a fair catch. The receiver is not afforded the protection he would get if he were the signaler, and a free kick on the next play is not an option.

Fed allows a subsequent free kick to a valid fair catch? I thought only the NFL did.

It is also possible for A to free kick following a fair catch, if they run a play in which a penalty is accepted and the down is replayed.
Consider: In the last few seconds on the 1st half after a fair catch following a punt, Team A snaps the ball from Team B's 45 yard line. A24 gains 10 yards on a running play and during the down B26 grasped and pulled A24s facemask. The penalty moves the ball to B's 20 yard line. A now has the option to free kick since 1st down is repeated. Something they may want to do since the 1st half is about to end. |
