My crew wants me to institute a Kangaroo Court for next year. WHat kinds of things do your crews include? Please share some of yours.

Forgetting a piece of equipment.

Forgetting to bring your "longs" on a cold night!

Calling a foul in the last minute of a blowout.

Echoing whistles
Linesman waving off his own flag
Officials on the ground
Longest flight for flag or bag
More than two flags for one foul

First flag of the night has to buy the sodas after the game.

An inadvertant whistle has to buy everyone's dinner.

A kangaroo court is a 'judicial' proceeding that denies proper procedure in the name of expediency; a fraudulent or unjust trial where the decision has essentially been made in advance, usually for the purpose of providing a conviction, either going through the motions of manipulated procedure or allowing no defense at all.

In sports parlance it's used to punish players for errors and other mistakes on the field. Fines are allotted, and at the end of the year, the money collected is given to charity. The organization may also use the money for a team party at the end of the season.

Thank s to everyone who responded. You've provided a great start for our Court. Can't wait to start dolling out the justice.

Similar in fairness to a "railroad" election.

We used to have one for making a bad throw when relaying the ball in OR if you dropped a ball that was right to you.

Not getting a number on a foul.

Pointing the wrong way on a turnover.

Lining up in the wrong spot.

Our crew has been doing this for years and it really adds a lot to the fun of officiating - we've even had the wives get involved by tattling on dumb things their spouses have done!

We give a "point" for anything we darn well want to - such as many of those mentioned here. We look for spots on uniforms, unpolished shoes, socks not even, etc. On the field, late flags, beanbags that miss the spot, a clumsy signal or mechanic, etc.

We use sub-varsity game points as tie-breakers. All the other crews around here know about our deal, so they'll let us know if someone on the crew does something goofy during a game.

Many times, the guys give themselves the points. The one with the most buys the first round, second place buys the second round, etc.

Our backjudge forgot his hat in the locker room a couple of weeks ago and had to find a janitor to unlock the room before the half started. That was an automatic winner for that week, and we carried over a couple of points to the next week just for good measure.

As I said, we have a lot of fun with it - especially the debate after the game about who had the most points.
