Forgot to include this play, which also occurred in the same time frame:


In a scrimmage kick formation on 4th down, the snap goes over the head of the punter and the ball ends up on the ground in the endzone. K40 runs to the ball and kicks it (it is lying on the ground when he kicks it) out the backside of the endzone (across the endline.)

You have two options - take the penalty for a safety, or decline the penalty for a safety.

YEP! Safety, either way.

Correct! "Do you want a safety or a safety?" Please don't take the time to check with your coach. :)

However, had the ball been kicked from the field of play out the back of the endzone, now you do have some options!

If he had kicked it at the 4 into the endzone and out the back, you have illegal kick - loose ball play and the spot of K's fould is behind the basic (previous) spot.

Decline - Result of play - saftey.
Accept - K's ball, 5 yard penalty (1/2 the distance) from the 4 so it will be K's ball 4th & whatever from the 2.
