Question for line judges

I know that the LJ is supposed to keep the game clock, but I wanted to know how many of y'all do it simultanious to a working game clock? I tried to do it the past Friday night and found that my brain was overwealmed with the new task that I had trouble focusing on the more important keys and action. Is this a standard task that y'all do, or is it only something you watch when there is a game clock issue?

BTW, had something happen Friday night that I will probably never see again. A has the ball on their own 5. A1 drops back to throw a short pass. Ball is muffed into the air by A2 and then intercepted by B1, who in his confusion, get turned around and runs 95 yards the wrong way to get a safety.

We don't keep the time on the field unless there's an issue with the scoreboard clock. The scoreboard clock is official.

I'm no longer a LJ and only did it once when I worked that position. But, now in my new crew I have the LJ keep the clock. We decided to do that last year after the scoreboard malfunctioned during a varsity game. We know approximately how much time was on the clock but weren't exactly sure. Luckily it was a digital clock and it came back online 30 seconds later with the time unchanged. After that we decided to keep the time on the field as a backup.

In a five man crew the BJ is responsible for keeping the game time if the clock goes out. It's not worth the effort to keep it on the field if the clock is working - it's too distracting. It is important to be aware of the game time so if there is a problem, you have some idea of the approximate time.

You probalby have an approximate time, but the stat guys often will have down the time each play was ran, so could give you the time of the previous play.
