Anybody got the Redding study guides yet? (NFHS)

They were supposed to be shipped by the end of May. Anyone heard anything?

yankeesfan Mon Jun 05, 2006 02:41pm

where can you order them from?

ChickenOfNC Mon Jun 05, 2006 03:07pm

Study guides......

I ordered Wed. night on-line. An e-mail from Double S the next day (6/1) stated they would ship out Saturday (6/3).

Referee magazine shipped my Rules by Topic and Illustrated Rules very quickly. I ordered them at the same time and received them on Sat. morning.

How are the Rules by Topic and Simplified and Illustrated? I've never purchased either of them and was thinking about getting one or both. I heard the Rules by Topic is just like the Rule Book, just moved around some.

Are they worth it?

HLin NC Tue Jun 06, 2006 09:30pm

Rules by Topic

Nope- a bit easier to read and case plays are listed with the topic. Also there are boxes giving the "rationale" behind some rules. The Illustrated seems more in depth than the NF "funny book" but I've just skimmed it.

Given the cost difference, I may skip Redding's in the future.

That's the main reason I was asking, too. Heading to Jamaica for my honeymoon on the 17th, and wanted it by then (for when I'm not doing "other stuff":D )

I received my three books from the NASO order form, good stuff, quick shipping.
1. football rules by topic
2. judgement calls
3. smart officiating, not that I am not SMART!!!!

I picked up the judgment calls and smart officiating books previously - I like both of them, especially the judgment calls reference. I re-read that one several times each year.

I received the "football rules by topic" reference about two weeks ago but haven't had time to get through it all yet. I'll reserve judgment until I finish it. I'm still waiting for my rules/case books for 2006.

Hey tpaul,

Anything arrive for you from our friend from Philadelphia? I'm beginning to think it's a no go.

What exactly were you expecting from the guys at the Liberty Bell Clinic and from whom? I'm going to see a couple of the clinicians real soon and can ask.

Please feel free to e-mail me.

I am ordering the Rules by Topic and Illustrated Rules Book (which is supposed to be better than before) and the Reddings Study Guide. I hope to get them soon and go to town reading and highlighting. Getting pumped!!!

grantsrc Sat Jun 24, 2006 08:09am

I got most of my stuff. I really like the format of the Rules by Topic. Yes, it is basically a combination of the rule book and case book, but I really like how they have everything set up. Makes sense. I almost like it more than the Redding's Guide- which seems thicker this year than last.

Liberty Bell

Walt,

I sent you an email on it.

What is your assessment of the "bin books?" Also, how different is the HS Simplified and Illustrated than before?
BTW: I appreciate you posting all the resources on your webpage!

Don't have the bin books yet. They said they will be out in late July if I remember correctly.

As for the web page, thanks for the feedback. I cannot take full credit for it though because most of the stuff there is simply a collection of stuff other officials have put together. I simply posted all of it. But I am glad that it is useful!

Still haven't received my Redding's NCAA guide. The Fed Guide came a month ago. Anyone else still not received theirs?

jgunn Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:50am

are there any useful books with detailed drawings and mechanics(high school) that anyone would suggest?

I don't have the book with me right now so I may not get the title right, but there is a mechanics guide that is published by Referee I believe. The new Simplified and Illustrated book (new and improved for 2006) uses some of the same "PlayPics" illustrations and is a pretty reasonably-priced reference. The mechanics study guide is more expensive but gives a pretty comprehensive look at the 4 and 5 person crew mechanics for most of the typical types of plays you'll encounter. The NFHS Official's Manual will give you similar info but without the drawings. The NFHS Official's Manual does, however, go into more detail about eligible pass receiver keys.
