Tony,
I've been a registered Football Official for 9 years, and the way things are goin' in our girls' Hoops season, I may have to get on the gridiron in order to avoid standing under that net.
I used to have problems with the chalk lines tripping me up, but since most lines are painted now, I may be able to hold my footing at little better.
I'll be looking for a Jr.High game with understanding coaches.

Do the officials in WV get to vote on who the best coaches are?
Well in Michigan it works just fine ...if you're a coach.
Suffolk County Long Island uses a rating system where the coaches rate the officials. In my personal opinion it is a detriment to objective evaluation of officials because 1) coaches focus on specific situations or preconceived notions to rate not objective criteria 2) there is no standard, what I mean is coach A may evaluate a crew as having an excellent game and rate 5 on a 1 to 5 scale. Coach B may decide no official is perfect, even though, they had an excellent game and give a 4.

Coaches should be part of a rating system but that portion should not exceed more than 30 percent. The remainder should be done by peer review and objective raters. I am sure in every group of officials the individuals who need work are known by all.

WOW! You learn something everyday. If you're regstered, why don't you practice your craft?

Well..., although Football was my best sport, Hoops was my favorite.

Ed makes good points

Ed makes some good points. I believe we have been, on the whole, fortunate in West Virginia with our rating system. Most of the coaches do take it seriously and rate accordingly. Besides, if an overall rating is the sum total of individual game performances, than having a bad game will affect your overall rating. We do have many officials who continually rate out at Excellent by the end of the year, I can't help but think that they are indeed excellent officials. But, as I pointed out earlier, there are systemic flaws. I rated out a perfect 2.00 this past season, which is the highest possible rating in the "Good" column. I most likely received 'excellent' marks from as many coaches who rated me with 'good' marks. In our system, it is therefore entirely possible that every winning coach in a game I did gave me an 'excellent' rating, and every loser a 'good' rating. But who knows...

... And, as Ed says, we all know who needs work, but I would add we generally don't have to look very far past the mirror in most cases to see who that is...
