A ball, 3rd and 5 from B45.

A40 is lined up on the line of scrimmage next to the offensive tackle. A80 is wide of A40 and is also on the line of scrimmage.

Quarterback, A10 takes the snap and is under pressure from a heavy pass rush. A10 shovels the ball forward to A40 who advances to the B35.

The pass was received by A40 -

a) Behind the line of scrimmage.
b) Beyond the line of scrimmage.

What if it was 4th down?

(Corrected player notation)

I'm assuming you meant to say by A40.

If that's correct then...

a) Illegal touching by ineligible. 5yds from spot of touching, loss of down, 4th down.

b) OPI by A40. 15 yds from previous spot, loss of down, 4th down.

If on 4th down, then enforce the foul either way and B still gets the ball.

Someone please state NCAA rules (and corrections on my fed response).

NCAA:

Scenario A: Illegal touching. Loss of down at previous spot.

Scenario B: 2 fouls: illegal touching (see above) and ineligible man downfield (5 yard penalty from previous spot). Choice is not obvious, so get captain/coach's input.

If 4th down, Team B's ball in A, and choice is probably more obvious in B.

Lightbulb Canadian ruling

[In Canada amateur our ineligible numbers are 40's, 50's and 60's so I will assume that A40 is really A30 and is normally eligible.]

In (a) we have an inelegible receiver touching the pass which is a 10 yard penalty from PLS DR.

In (b) we have two fouls: ineligible receiver and illegal man downfield. Both carry the same penalty of 10 yards from PLS DR.

The down does not matter.
