So we're halfway through the season. Can we make some predictions about the SuperBowl crew?

As a recap, the WHs and CCs are:

85, Ed Hochuli

99, Tony Corrente

42, Jeff Triplette

63, Bill Carollo

94, Mike Carey

86, Bernie Kukar

14, Ron Winter

65, Walt Coleman

34, Gerry Austin

20, Larry Nemmers

77, Terry McAuley

123, Tom White

127, Bill Leavy

19, Scott Green

52, Bill Vinovich

66, Walt Anderson

135, Pete Morelli

I believe you can't WH a SB unless you've been a WH for at least 5 regular seasons. That ousts Green, Vinovich, Anderson and Morelli. McAuley did it last year, so he's out. White won't get it. Neither do I think will Winter (although I like him). Triplette's crew had a horrible IW today - it *has* to hurt his crew's rating.

Edit: Carey is 94, not 92.

I believe they've gotten rid of keeping crews together for the later rounds of the playoffs. So maybe an IW by a crewmate will not hurt.

I didn't see it- what exactly happened?

I say Mike Carey but I'm not sure if he's worked a NFC or AFC championship game yet. (that's a requirement too). If not Mike, then I say Corrente.

I really like Mike Carey, but have to believe that he got "dinged" on the BAL/DET game earlier this year.

This is correct. Referee Magazine page 11.

Correct. One must have previously worked a CF.

Since '94, those are: Kukar, Coleman, Hochuli, McAuley, Austin, Carollo, and Corrente. Since McAuley is out, that only leaves 6 guys. In the past 5 years, the other WHs have been ?, Hochuli, Carollo, Kukar, and Austin. So, if it is new blood this year, it is either Coleman or Corrente.

I hope for Coleman. I also think Mike Carey will get a CF this year so that he is SB eligible for the future.

Is there something wrong with referring to referees as referees instead of "white hats"? R instead of WH?

I guess I'm being overly sensitive now, but this is developing into one of my pet peeves...

JugglingReferee Tue Nov 08, 2005 06:14am

Dommer,

I must know, why is it that this is a pet peeve of yours?

ThickSkin Tue Nov 08, 2005 06:21pm

I like Kukar, Carey and Hochuli. I would like to see Carey get a CF so he could do a SB soon.

BTW, Whose crew had the inadvertant whistle in the Baltimore game this weekend?

Snake~eyes Tue Nov 08, 2005 10:47pm

I doubt Coleman will get it.

Isn't Hochuli out because he did a SB last year?

How is Kukar doing this year?

Mike Carrey will definitely get a CF this year and I bet he follows up with a Superbowl the following year.

I don't know really.

I thought Hochuli did the Panthers-Patriots Super Bowl two years ago. I can't remember who did the Super Bowl last year.

FredFan7 Wed Nov 09, 2005 10:57am

It was Terry McAuley #77.

He would be breaking new ground if he did get those assignments. Nobody since 1984 has done that. Not Markbriet, Cashion, or Hochuli.

ljudge Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:59am

Hochuli was an alternate last year. I have NEVER seen an official get an ovation from fans. I was lucky enough to be assigned the job of usher at the game and was close to the field. When Ed walked by he got a "standing O" from about 50-70 fans in their endzone seats before the game. He looked up and acknowledged them as he was walking down the endline.

When Red Cashion was introduced prior to the coin toss at Super Bowl 30, he got a nice round of applause.

When Jerry Markbreit was introduced at Super Bowl 29 he got BOOED by the San Diego fans. I think they remembered the "holy roller" call in favor of the Raiders in 1978.
