Sorry guys, I hate these types of threads. But my booking supervisor asked me to gather fee information. He has a meeting next month and the subject will be discussed. I would like to have info from:

VA, KY, TN, GA, SC, AL, MS, FL

I need:

Middle school/Jr High, JV, Varsity

Travel expense?

Is it the same across the state?

If you live in one of these states, just put the state name in the subject window and fill in the rest.

Thanks!

In KY we pay $40 to the KHSAA to register for the 1st sport and $25 for each additional sport. Officials registered for over 27 years are exempt from the registration fees.

The Varsity football fee set by the state is $50 per contest official per 5 man crew for regular season games
Playoff Round
1: $55 plus some mileage for travel
2: $60 plus some mileage for travel
3: $65 plus...
4: $70 plus...
Finals: $80 per person.
(and are expected to have the same rules knowledge and judgement as those who work at the pro level ;) )

Our assoc dues are usually 1/2 a game fee for crew officials. Pull Crew or subs pay $half that amount. Our assoc is going to be $35 & $20 for next year.

Each region has a board of controls that sets the game fees for reg season games. In our region/assoc, that fee is set at $70 per varsity game so we are making the same as a 4th round game. Our guys get paid less to do rounds 1,2, & 3 of the playoffs. We have a good relationship with our schools though. They know, appreciate, and encourage our contiuned training and gave us a $15 increase for this year. The state requires attendence to 4 assoc meetings for post season. We require 6 and have 9 scheduled meetings.

Sub varsity is a different animal. Schools aren't required to use an assoc for sub V. Those schools that do use our assoc pay $45 for all Fr & JV games. I have a few guys that work with me outside our assoc that get
$30 per game for 6 min qtrs
$35 per game for 8 min qtrs
$45 per game for 10 min qtrs

There are also some that just pay $30 for 10 min qtrs. Just depends on where you are located.

If you don't care, post your final survey results.

Thanks for the info, Gman.

Questions

1- Do you get any travel for regular season games?

2- I'm confused. You wrote, "The Varsity football fee set by the state is $50 per contest official per 5 man crew for regular season games."

Then you wrote, "Each region has a board of controls that sets the game fees for reg season games. In our region/assoc, that fee is set at $70 per varsity game so we are making the same as a 4th round game."

3- How is travel pay determined?

Thanks again for your input!

1. State does not require travel pay. Some regions/assocs don't pay any. Obviously ours takes travel into consideration. We are 45 minutes away from the nearest school (our choice) and fuel can get tough on us but it is a better place to call plus we get paid the difference as the local assoc, which has 6 schools within a 10 minute drive from here, only pays $55.

2. The state says each school will pay a minimum fee of $50 per official per contest. The local/regional board of control either adopts the minimum or decides what amount over the min they are willing to pay. The region we work has a good BOC.

3. In playoff games I think the person traveling the furthest, who is considered to be the driver, is given the travel pay based on mileage. If he meets someone at another point and the other person drives, the one payed is expected to square up with the other driver.

Our crew hasn't been real good about helping with fuel. We somewhat agreed at the beginning of the season that each person pays the driver 5 bucks for 100 mile drives and 10 bucks for over 100. Our games are either 100 mile round trip or 160. We figured that a 100 mile trip would take 20 bucks gas. The longer trips wouldn't take double the fuel but would be more wear, tear, and exposure. We use a suburban that is pretty comfy.

Thanks. I thought that's what you meant with regard to #2.

We presently have a flat fee with no travel. Anytime we go out of county, whether it's 120 miles or 20 miles, we give the driver $5 each. The long and short trips balance out.

I'm in SC. It's my first year, so I haven't figured it out completely, but I will answer since I haven't seen any other SC folks on this board yet.

Varsity (5 man): $65 - $80 depending on level "A" thru "AAAA".

Sub-Var (4 man): $31, usually played at two games a night with the shorter quarters and "the old rules", (starting the clock on the RFP after change of possession.)

Travel: for all levels seems to be about 15ยข a mile. If everyone rides together, it's between the crew on settling up with the driver.

Dues: $50 a year to the local association, which includes our NFHS registration fee, a preseason barbeque and a post season banquet. (It does not include green fees for the pre-season golf tournament.)

Our local association does not book. The state high school league office does that for everyone in the state. (Definitely not a job I would want.)

Are you in the western part of the state? The difference I have is 40.00 minimum for JV and below, 60.00 for varsity in 15th region, 65.00 in the 14th region. I am in the 14th and travel to the 15th to do games, a lot of driving but it is my decision and should not expect travel money.

Tennessee

Varsity: $75 per on-field official; $50 for clock operator

The Varsity fee is state-wide. JV/Freshman/Middle School fees are set by each association.

We get travel expense in the playoffs -- an extra $5 per crew member if the crew travels 50 miles one way.

Our association charges $180 per crew for sub-varsity. This means that a 5-man crew gets $36 each, and a 4-man crew gets $45. We usually only use a 5-man crew if we have two games so each person makes $72. We try not to have fewer than 4, but sometimes we have had to work 3-man, which is worth $60.

I have heard of some associations that charge $65 per official for middle school and JV; that seems a little overpriced to me.

NOTE: All varsity fees in all sports are going up by $5 for the 2006-07 season.

irefky,
No, we work 12th. I took the info right out of the KY Officials Licensing Guidebook. Actually, it was the 04-05 hand book.

Are you speaking of the fees required by the state or your local/regional boc?
