A is lined up for a field goal. B22 rushes in and leaves his feet in an attempt to block the kick.

Play situations B22:

A- Blocks the kick but runs into the kicker or holder

Legal in both?

B- Does not block the kick but runs into the kicker or holder

Roughing the kicker 15 yards and auto first down?

C- Blocks the kick but B55 runs into the kicker or holder pretty much simultaneously with the block?

Legal by B55?

D- Blocks the kick but B55 pretty violently unloads on the holder (lets say he hits him high around the helmet for this situation)?

Roughing the holder or personal foul on B55 or nothing?

Just curious how you white hats would handle these scenarios?

Not a white hat yet, but...

A) Legal unless the contact was avoidable
B) Running or Roughing, 5 or 15+AFD
C) Legal unless the contact was avoidable
D) Have to see it but it would not be Roughing unless ruled unavoidable. I doubt PF unless you already had it as avoidable unless something else about the hit makes it a PF. The holder technically has the ball until it is kicked so if the ball is touched by the defense that is near the kicker/holder and the contact could easily be an attempt to tackle the holder or block the kick. The magic is the kick is touched by the defense, not necessarily the player that hits the kicker or holder, and the contact is unavoidable an not otherwise a personal foul all its own.

In the situation remember B22 is airborne and B55 is just charging at the holder.

Few years back in a state semifinal game with all the state board in attendance had a similar play.

Defense jumps off sides ball is snapped whistles blow. Bangbang play ball never kicked and a defender keeps going and smokes the holder. Hit with his forearms high at the helmet area.

We called defensive encroachment. Half the distance

Also dead ball unsportsmanlike conduct. Half the distance

Player safety was my number one concern on the play.

Not exactly like my previous example but appreciated the feedback

This is not "unsportsmanlike conduct". Unsportsmanlike conduct fouls are non-contact. This is is a dead ball personal foul.

sorry for the wrong language i did call it a personal foul, was using the "USC" lingo more to show that it was completely not called for.

I stood there for a second and really contemplated as to eject the player.

I actually heard a R say (while signalling USC on a Personal Foul) "Unsportsmanlike Contact" last week. He bought the beer afterward, and took his beating like a man.

Unfortunately, unless you eject him then, the personal foul doesn't have the compounding effect that UC might have, in that a second UC foul is ejection and not allowed to play in the next game (in our state).

I caution my crew that late hits and other contact fouls are personal fouls and not UC. Be aware of the compounding effect of UC and the consequent ejection.
