Next year Im looking to make that jump from high school to the NCAA... I would like to get ahead of the game and join a NCAA Rule Study Group before that... I need to learn the rule difference... If you guys know of any rule study groups in Michigan, Ohio or Indiana... Please let me Know... I live in Michigan...

Thanks Forksref that was helpful.... But I would like to find a study group they are great I started one for high school and it help me kkp fresh through the winter and summer... We met at a bar twice month to talk rules and drink beer too of course...

That's a great idea. I have been trying to get some things going with our association this year on Wed. nights.

If you have any ideas or materials that you use in your Fed discussions, let me know what you have.

We use video and pictures to look at our mechanics…. Then we will watch one of those junk games on ESPN Thursdays to compare us to the NCAA guys…. Then we go over the suggested communication signals from the NFHS… The best is I got a program for my laptop from a advertisement in the 2005 NFHS rules book go to http://www.rules-study.com then we take the tests together… You find out how much you really don’t know… Plus depending on how much we have had to drink we come up with some strange play with as many rules violations we can get into it and quiz each other….. The highest that has been answered correctly was (10 rules violation in one play) and we keep track of who has the record each time and they don’t have to pay for their drinks the rest of us do… Its fun but we have learned a lot… A first year guy that joined the group of us is now doing games on a Varsity level in one year… the shared knowledge is great….

Deager-From your location, it sounds like you are near Ann Arbor? They should have meetings, the man (his last name is on your shirt tag) himself might be in charge of it. I'd ask you local NF assoc for reference.

I know what your saying but before I do that I need to know NCAA rules... I dont even want to think about trying to join the ranks of the NCAA until I know the rules and mechanics inside and out... I just want to sit down with some guys in the know and learn, study and watch...

I'd go ahead & get hold of Dick & get involved with the local study group guys. We've all been through it and when we have our weekly study session, everybody picks up something. Be it your 1st year or your 31 year. Don't assume you have to know it all before you hooked up with the group. They want to help you & they can teach you the right way to do things & understand the intent and application behind the rules.

I have begun to attend meeting this year and will have my first game (JV) on Sunday. I am there to learn from those who are working the games. It is amazing how well they know the rules. You don’t have to start working games right away, you can’t work Varsity for two years anyway.

i have cut back on my rules studying this year. i am trying to clean up my driving record. a long session of studying at the bar will wreck that.

I just hate going into a new level not being as prepared as I can be… I had a easy learning curve when I started high school ball I played 4 years in college, I coached for 2 years in high school and I study the rule book for one year before I decided to make the jump form coach to official… But I will take your advice and look to see if there is a group around here I can be set up with….

Deager - Honig is a great resource. Also, make sure you go to his NCAA clinic in April. You will learn a ton and meet a lot of college officials from the MI area.

You might also want to find out who assigns the small college conferences (DIII, Junior College, etc) in your area as a resource as well.
