Interesting thing I found on the North Carolina HS Asso. web site.
It appears that NC has so many officials that they can mandate an extra fee to sign up if you miss a deadline "for ANY reason" THE EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS NOW JUNE 1st INSTEAD OF JUNE 30th. IF YOU REGISTER AFTER THAT DEADLINE, THE FEE WILL INCREASE $10.00 FOR EACH SPORT. ALSO NEW - THERE ARE NOW DEADLINES FOR RECEIVING YOUR REGISTRATION CARDS. FOR FOOTBALL, VOLLEYBALL, AND SOCCER, IF YOU REGISTER AFTER JUNE 1st, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR CARD. FOR BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING, IF YOU REGISTER AFTER SEPTEMBER 1st YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR CARD. FOR BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL, IF YOU REGISTER AFTER DECEMBER 1st YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR CARD. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THESE NEW DEADLINES!

It doesn't really have anything to do with number of officials that we have. If has to do with the number of them who procrasitnate and do not register in a timely manner.
Previously, the registration renewals went out in early May. The deadline for submitting registration was June 30. Officials were waiting to late July and Augst before registering. This was dragging out the process for the one person in the NCHSAA office who handles all those registrations. It was also creating problems for assignors who needed to book REGISTERED officials for scrimmages, which start the second weekend in August. There's always been a $10 late fee for registering late. But I believe the suggestion came from the assignors, that the deadline was moved back to June 1, and that the registration card that also allows you to get in free to any game be withheld if you register late. This is the second year of this policy. I understand that there were very, very few late registrations this year. |

Heck, my local football association made $620.00 bucks this season as a result of late fee collections.
We all get a letter in November listing the dues and a due date along with a late fee rate schedule through Dec 31st. Once the final deadline has been exceeded (Jan 1), you are not eligible to officiate the next season. Some guys just don't get it when it comes to "paying the bill". |

Maryland
In Maryland idividuals dont register with the state.
The Association that you are a member of registers for you. And the fee is taken out of your pervious year earnings so we arent responsible for that part either. |
