a=offense b=defense

i was watching a high school game and team "a" went for a field goal try. the ball was blocked by the defense and the ball went out of bounds through the endzone. the officials called it a safety and i couldnt believe it. i was just wondering maybe i missed something here. shouldnt this have been a touchback?

thank you

Which end zone?

If it went back in to "A"'s endzone and through. It is a safety. Think about a blocked punt situation, it's no different.

However, I assume you mean it went through "B's" end zone. That would be a touchback. Now if B possessed the ball before it went in the endzone, then either was tackled in their endzone or fumbled the ball back and through the endzone, you would have a safety.

If it went OOB's thru B's endzone, it should have been a TB when it broke the plane of B's goal line. A FG is just a scrimmage kick, punts or FGs are scrimmage kicks. I cannot see a crew messing that one up. Are you sure this is exactly how it happened?
