not my whistle

I had a situation that I wasn't sure how to handle. The football field is right next to the soccer field here and during a Freshman game the soccer team also had a game. The whistle sounded over there at a horrible time. A kid got hit and was fighting for yardage. His forward progress was NOT stopped but the whistle from the soccer field made the defense let up. Luckily the kid tripped over his own feet when the defender let go but what if he had run for a touchdown. Then the defense would be wary about paying attention to the whistle. Anyone have any suggestions?
