I do quite a bit of lower level JV NFHS games where we normally have a 3 man crew and typically these games are played on fields that are of course not the varsity field and usually don't have a press box or even stands for the spectators.

My question is with the Referee giving the signals for a penalty. Since there is no press box, what do other people do? Do you still face the home team and give the signal and thats it? I've seen many white hats that give the signals to the home side then turn around and give it again to the visitor side.

Any suggestions?

Home side, or the side where the majority of the fans are sitting.

Give the signals to one side only. It looks hokey to give the signal to both sides. I am just giving a personal opinion.

Peace

I agree with Rut.

We have one field here (ONE!) where the home team is on the east side of the field. Nearly 100% of the time, my body turns toward the visitors (west) when I'm about to signal a penalty (or a TD for that matter). I even concentrate on it at this field, and consistently turn the wrong way first.

Preliminary and Secondary?

How many WHs are giving preliminary signals, and secondary (after U marches off penalty)?

All white hats do it where I am, except maybe in middle school games where you have new white hats.
