November 19, 1978. Thirty-one seconds left in the game, Giants lead the Eagles, 17-12. The Eagles are out of time outs. Giants just need to take a knee and the game is over. Inexplicable, the Giant QB attempts to hand off to Larry Csonka. The ball is fumbled. Herman Edwards scoops it up and returns it for a game winning touchdown.

Eagle fans know this as the "Miracle in the Meadowlands". Giant fans simply call it "The Fumble".

This play caused teams to rethink the situation and take a knee with several guys in position to tackle any would-be recovery of a fumble. The offensive coordinator for the play was Bob Gibson, my former landlord and former coach at Bowling Green. I couldn't blame him, as that was what all teams did at the time. I think he lost his job over the play.

We in the Philly area every once in a while get these crazy breaks from stupid coaching. Like Barry Switzer on a cold, blustery December afternoon going for it on 4th and 2 (TWICE) in Dallas' own territory with 2 minutes to play.
