Can't find my mechanics book. Someone enlighten me on the locations of the R, LJ, BJ and U when bringing captains to the field for the coin toss or reenactment. I know the L is on the chain side. What about the rest? Thanks.

U escorts captains of team whose team box is on the side where LTG equipment is located.

L (4 man)/BJ (5 man) whose team box is on side where LTG equipment is located, remains at inbounds mark to keep team members who are not involved in toss between you and sideline.

LJ, whose team box is on side opposite LTG equipment, remains at inbounds mark to keep team members who are not involved in toss between you and sideline.

Thanks, makes more sense than what we've been doing.

Assuming you're standing on the home sideline facing the field and the scoreboard is in the right endzone...

Visitors sideline:
BJ capt capt capt capt Umpire

Home sideline

Referee capt capt capt capt Line Judge

The R and U continue to the center of the field. R should always be facing the scoreboard and be across from the umpire is the point here.. The HL if he's available stands at the inbounds mark with the BJ if he has completed is pre-game conference with the chain crew.

5-man: We have R facing scoreboard with U and BJ facing the R about 10 yds away. LJ brings home captains to center and L visitors so that the L and LJ wind up next to the U and BJ. We end up with captains facing each other and the other 4 officials facing the R.

I have captains shake hands. I introduce the officials. I give the short sportsmanship speech (required by the state). Then, as R, I have the visiting captain call the toss before I toss it. I repeat his call and the other officials echo it. I toss it and I let it hit the ground.

The leadership of our association met informally with area head coaches prior to the season and requested that they instruct their captains as to exactly what they wanted in terms of choosing options at the toss. So far so good. If I were coach, I'd say your only choices if you win the toss are to defer or to receive. (Unless you have hurricane force winds to deal with.) The reason I mentioned this to the coaches is that a couple years ago a captain messed up. The coach said before the game, "We screwed up, didn't we?" I said, "Yep, you'll be kicking off twice."

I've had this happen twice in two days! Once in a college JV game and again last night at a 9th grade game.

Just wondering, why is R facing the clock? What does it matter? I have always done it that way but never thought of why.

Maybe just so there is a standardized way to face, so that the whitehats are all facing the same way week to week.

Back in CNY we had all officials go out for
the toss and the R would introduce them.
Here only the R and U escort captains to
mid field--the others stay at the hash marks.
We also have the "speaking" captains lined
up so they are next to the R who is facing the
scoreboard.

As Snake~eyes said, just to standardize it.
