Line up the players so the team going on defense first has their back to the goal line they're defending.
Signal first down towards that goal line.

NCAA: CCA manual says to place hand shoulder of the toss winner.
Then position captain(s) of the team on offense towards the opponents goaline and give the 1st down signal in that direction.

Very simple. NF should be no different.
