I just want to make a list of football movies. Include movies that have football in them.

Rudy
The Replacements
Varsity Blues
The Longest Yards
The Longest Yards - the dumb re-make
Any Given Sunday
Remember the Titans
North Dallas Forty
The Program

Any others? (Likely they'll be from a number of years ago.)

WOW! What a fantastic list. More than I ever expected. And I thought that I'd seen a lot of football movies. :D

Did you get that list from a website somewhere?

jjrye22 Mon Jul 25, 2005 10:21am

I put it together before when someone was thinking out loud about football films. I searched through IMDB (the internet movie database) on different keywords, and put together the list. There were a lot more listed, but I figured they were European football, or only had a character related to football without any football content (i.e. Girl dates the quarterback).

I know there is a wonderful book from Leonard Maltin (sp?) that lists movies, and clasifies them - it had subsections just like this and I wouldn't be surprised if it had a sections for Sports-Football, but I don't have it anymore :-(

There are also more documentaries out there, and videos of particluar games, but I tried to keep them to a minimum on the list (except for the REALLY early ones, 10 minutes of Arm-Navy 1911 must be really cool to watch, maybe even some penalty enforcement!)

Some on the list might be wrong, and I'm sure there are some missing.
By the way the German one (Vorspiel mit Nachspiel) is to my knowledge not released, but I'm in it (11 hours of filming for a QB sack, a sweep for 0 yardage, and a pass TD pass from the 30).

I read that someone here is in Firday Night Lights, but I have no idea who.

Sweet stuff! I buddy of mine is in The Playmakers. And in a different, less entertaining sport (basketball) a colleague of mine is the official in Finding Forrester.

I'm glad Blockbuster has no late fees. Looks like I'll be renting some movies. :)

CBrockett Mon Jul 25, 2005 12:05pm

Talking about movies. Can anyone help me with a movie I watched at the theaters as a kid. It must have been released late 70' to early 80's.... If I had to guess a year, I would say 1979.

It was a documentary on The Bear Bryant. It showcased a preseason of football... the only thing I can remember is it showed two football players in a pit with o ne ladder... the first one out got to seelp in his bed and eat witht he rest of the football team... the other guy was to stay in the pit for the night.

Movies about Bryant...

The Bear (1984)
The Bear: The Legend of Coach Paul Bryant (2001) (TV)
The Junction Boys (2002) (TV)

Looks like there are a LOT more movies too! Just on one name I added a few movies to the list.
The '84 movie stars Gary Busey

Would anyone think including
Forrest Gump (1994) as a football movie - from his college years, or is that sort of stuff too short? I ask because Bryant was listed as a character in that movie too...

The Spirit of West Point (1947)

Grambling's White Tiger (1981) (TV)
Just One of the Guys (1985)
The Best of Times (1986)
Everybody's All-American (1988)

On the less serious side, if you want any movies that include any football--MASH has a football scene in it.

Plus this is really a stretch, but its one of my favorite movies--Airplane! has a rendition of the "Gipper" speech (in this case, its the "Zipper" speech).

cowbyfan1 Sat Jul 30, 2005 01:22am

JugglingReferee Sat Jul 30, 2005 06:37am

You should consider adding "Brian's Song" to your collection.

I will take a look for it. Most of these movies I pick up for $3.99 each in a Previously Viewed bin at local stores.

I'll keep an eye out for that one, as you're not the first person to recommend it!

I saw Gridiron Gang at the store last week but I thought I already had it. LOL

But do you have
Baseketball [1998]
from the South Park guys, based on a game that the producer played as a kid.
Not my sort of movie (I'm not a South Park fan), but some people like these things.

LOL I played "soccer-baseball" as a kid.

I've seen Baseketball, and suppose technically, I should own it if I want my sports movie collection to be more complete. Maybe I'll buy it when I have no others left to buy.

Did you check eBay.com or .ca? :)

I hate UPS with a passion, and avoid their stupid brokerage fees.

Definitely, although I will say reading the book would be a better choice. Much deeper look, more thorough picture of the events. Great read.
