What is the range of numbers a player could be if he lines up on the end of the line or in the backfield and still be eligible to catch a pass?

Say the player is #74. If he wants to be eligible, would he have to check in with the referee EVERY play, or just one time when he enters the game and each time he comes in the game? And does it matter which referee he checks in with?

1..That is an NFL rule, and is not legal in NCAA, or FED.

In NFHS a player must be eilgible by number AND position to be an eligible receiver.

In a scrimmage kick formation, the 'numbering' rule changes. Any player may line up at any position, but the only eligible players must be 1-49 or 80-99 and on the end of the O-line to be eigible.

Same rule in NCAA.

The pros have different rules.
