As an official who is looking to move from HS (7 years experience) to college officiating this season, are there any recommendations for the best ways to learn the college rules, especially the differences between Federation and NCAA rules? I have printed out the 2004 NCAA rulebook, but have yet to start digging through it.

Thanks!

~Josh

Move to Texas or Mass. for a few years and work High School here. Other than that just read the book and ask questions on the forums. What little comparison I have done it is my opinion that NCAA rules are easier to grasp.

You can get the rules differences book put out by NASO. It's somewhat helpful.

The best way, though, is to just do games. No shortcuts from what I've found. One thing, better to make a college rule mistake in a HS game than a HS mistake in a college game.

Buy Reddings "Referee's Study Guide to the NCAA Rules"! Excellent teaching material!

I just made the same transition 2 years ago with the same aount of HS experince this is what I did. Go to a couple of camps/clincs , or ask some of the college guys in your local high school associaton for one of their old rule books and find out about any scrimmages you can work.

There is gonna be a clinc here in VA in early April where we have NFL officials come in and train you according to your position.

REPLY: jrfath...the NCAA rule book is available online in a PDF format. Go to http://www2.ncaa.org/sports/fall/football/mens/ and you can download it. Also, give some serious though to Dommer's recommendation of Redding's Study Guide. It's excellent! Also check out Rom Gilbert's site: http://members.atlantic.net/~gilbertr/. It provides excellent resource material.

Sorry for the short notification but the deadline to register for the CIAA/MEAC camp is Friday March 4 the cost is 225 or 250 I cant remeber off the top of my head

the date of the camp is April 1-3 at Hampton University
included in the camp is acutal on-field work at 1 of 2 division 1-AA scrimages which are critiqued by the NFL instructors.

If you want more info please e-mail or PM me with your fax number I can fax you a copy of the registration form tonight
