What do you guys think about those NFL logos on the Official's hats in the Super Bowl?

Is this sort of like the wearing NCAA patches for the NCAA tournaments?

JRutledge Sun Feb 06, 2005 07:58pm

Why did I just know someone was going to make some comment about the hats.

Peace

lol, I knew it was coming too.

LDUB Sun Feb 06, 2005 09:37pm

I just figured if someone is going to make a usless comment, it might as well be me.

ref18 Sun Feb 06, 2005 09:58pm

I think they look awful. If I was at home instead of at a party, I would've posted as soon as I saw the refs when they were behind Clinton and Bush.

I hope they aren't gonna use those hats for next season.

tjones1 Sun Feb 06, 2005 10:36pm

The Super Bowl was tonight?!?!?!?! :D :D ;)

Ref Ump Welsch Sun Feb 06, 2005 10:57pm

I thought the hats were ugly. The NFL emblem definitely did not belong on the front!

I thought they looked out of place myself.

waltjp Mon Feb 07, 2005 07:42am

I thought their shirts were just as bad. They had the flag over their pocket and their position placard on the pocket on the left side. On the right side they had an NFL patch and a Super Bowl patch. They're beginning to look like NASCAR drivers.

Ref Ump Welsch Mon Feb 07, 2005 08:50am

I didn't even notice the shirts. The hats were bad enough everytime I looked, my eyes were going into spasms!

OverAndBack Mon Feb 07, 2005 09:13am

For those who missed them:

The hats also had a Super Bowl logo on the side. They didn't look like official wear - they looked like something you'd get at Lidz in the Jacksonville airport.

ABoselli Mon Feb 07, 2005 09:49am

And what is up with long sleeves in the Super Bowl? It was 60 degrees. I'll give Mike Simonds a pass on that, but come on.

Hats were brutal. I wonder whose brainchild that was.

OverAndBack Mon Feb 07, 2005 10:06am

59 at kickoff but it did get progressively colder. The players had sideline jackets on as well.

FredFan7 Mon Feb 07, 2005 01:54pm

The uniforms are starting to look a little too cluttered with all the logos. I wonder if that's just a SB thing or will be see the NFL logo on all NFL officials hats next year...

REPLY: Coming from a state where we are required to wear a patch on our hats...I hope it was just a SB thing! They are ugly.

It's bad enough on the white hat (there wouldn't be a Super Bowl logo on the side, obviously - I hate anything on the side of a hat), but combined with the stripes on the black hats, it looks ridiculous.

That said, I used to have an all-black cap with an NFL shield on it, and I quite liked it.

Bob M. Mon Feb 07, 2005 02:37pm

REPLY: The ECAC has a red and blue logo on the outside of the sweat brim of the hat just behind the right ear. Doesn't look too bad, but you really can't tell what it is unless you're very close to it.

SWFLguy Mon Feb 07, 2005 05:43pm

I concur about all the logos.
US flag and "association" patch on
the shirt should be all.
Wonder if the FHSAA saw that and is
thinking of the money thay could make
having us put logos on our hats ??

ref18 Mon Feb 07, 2005 06:18pm

I should sell ad space on my umiform off e-bay :D:D

The forecast called for an eight degree drop in two hours following sunset. Probably a wise idea to put on the sleeves.

PSU213 Mon Feb 07, 2005 11:19pm

For the hats--I don't really understand why the patches did not show up in regular season, but 'magically' appeared in the Super Bowl. And, I agree, the patches definitely need to go.

As for the long sleeves, a couple of years ago when the SB was in San Diego (when Den. beat GB) the officials wore long sleeves. Go figure.

Dommer1 Tue Feb 08, 2005 04:15am

The hats were u g l y.

So now we're down to, what, 50? And you're running around? Not exactly the Ice Bowl.

Maybe it's just me, but it'd take a lot more than that to break out the longs.

ljudge Tue Feb 08, 2005 04:05pm

I'll tell ya what. I have no idea what the TV people said about the temperature. But I had a jacket on and froze my little butt off. But I'll note that I was standing there vs. running around. But seriously I was putting blankets on people sitting in wheelchairs and people were buying up blankets up in the stadium merchandise areas. Ed Hochuli put on a long-sleeve black jacket on TOP of his full uniform and walked the sidelines after the coin toss.

I had just a shirt on while the sun was out and when it went in it seemed like at least a 20-degree drop in windchill. The wind was whipping through the corner of the stadium where I was standing. The streamers on the goal posts weren't moving all that much which surprised me. But it was a little colder than people thought.

AndrewMcCarthy Tue Feb 08, 2005 04:59pm

OK, I'll bite...

How did you get to be an usher?

ljudge Tue Feb 08, 2005 06:34pm

See my new thread.

Dommer1 Wed Feb 09, 2005 04:46am

I believe all alternates are to wear the black jacket you described.

OverAndBack Tue Feb 22, 2005 12:29am

Bump because I was looking at some old USFL tapes and saw that in at least one season, USFL officials had the league logo on their (white for everybody) caps.

Since the league played in the spring and summer, they got to wear shorts a lot, too. And in the pre-Jordan days, they were pretty short.

Kinda scary.
