Seven-year vet McAulay to ref Super Bowl

NFL.com wire reports

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2005) -- Terry McAulay will work his first Super Bowl as a referee on Feb. 6.

McAulay, in his seventh season as an NFL official, has officiated two conference championship games, one second-round contest and one wild-card game in his career. In this postseason, he officiated the Rams-Falcons game.

McAulay, whose crew was rated the highest by the league during the season, is a senior computer scientist.

The full Super Bowl crew has 65 years of NFL experience, including four Super Bowls and 44 other postseason games.

The umpire will be Carl Paganelli, in his sixth year with the NFL and also making his Super Bowl debut. Head linesman Gary Slaughter and back judge Tony Steratore also will be in their first Super Bowls.

Side judge Rick Patterson and line judge Mark Steinkerchner each have worked one Super Bowl, in 2003. Field judge Tom Sifferman, the veteran of the crew with 18 years experience, will be in his third straight Super Bowl.

Three members of McAulay's full-time crew did not have five years NFL experience and one appearance in a championship game, the minimum criteria to work a Super Bowl. They were replaced by Paganelli, Slaughter and Sifferman, the next-highest rated officials at those positions.

Al Hynes will be the replay assistant.

Ed Hochuli is the alternate referee, with Garth DeFelice the backup umpire and Larry Rose the substitute field judge.

How does the backup umpire and field judge thing work? Does Umpire also replace LH/LJ? And FJ have the deep positions?
