If the ball is at the 30 yard line, is it a 48 yard field goald attempt? How far back do you put it?

The length of the attempt is measured from the yard line that the ball is kicked from.

Add 10 yards (for the endzone) from where the ball was kicked (traditionally the holder is 7 yards back from the line of scrimmage). So if the line of scrimmage was the 30, the field goal attempt would usually be about 47 yards.
