I don't think there was ANY contact at all on that punter. Watching in slomo, it looked like the punter took a tumble because he tried so hard to not get hit that he fell. But it appeared that there was no contact whatsoever.

I agree with giving explainations for picking up a flag, or relaying #'s, etc. Anything you would have to explain to a coach, the mic works great. Maybe even an explaination of a very unusual flag that was thrown. But I still say you don't stop the game to explain why you didn't throw a flag. You wouldn't do it near the end of the game when a team is in their hurry up offense with no timeouts. I also don't want to have to stop to decide whether this is a good time in the game to allow the offense time to think about their next play while I explain the rules to the fans.

And that's why I say use commons sense. Never stop the flow of the game. I'll use Hoculi as an example since he uses the mic real well to explain "no flag" situations. Most of the times he is moving to his position while making the "QB was out of the pocket" announcement and no part of the game was delayed.

I think he uses the mic more of when there is a conversation between officials, I think it is good, everyone is wondering what they're talking about anyhow.

Mike,

I think the wing official called the UNC, not Hochuli.

I didn't see the game. I heard about the call during the halftime of the 2nd wild-card game and saw where Coach Schottenheimer (SP??) was standing in a video they showed. I guess he was upset about what he thought was a roughing the punter call. Typical coach response, too.

Something like: "I asked my punter and HE said he was roughed so I stand by my decision to be where I was and I'd do it again."

I've been told by an NFL official "you NEVER see flags thrown on the coaches."

I'd love to find his e-mail address and see what he thinks about this one. :p Kinda hard to ignore when Coach S is out that far, though.
