I just missed it! My brother said he did not think B gave the ball a new impetus, but he does not understand the rule. Can you explain exactly what happened?

On the extra point, the hold was terrible and the kicker kicked the ball into the line. Unlike NFHS, in the NCAA this is a live ball. Team B player picked up the ball, intending to run it back... fumbled into his own endzone and a B player downed the ball there.

Just curious. I only saw a replay (once), but did the holder have the ball controlled when the kicker kicked the ball? Could there have been an illegal kick foul here?

Sure looked like a loose ball was kicked which would have been illegal. The foul would have negated the safety (which was a legit call) and loss of down part of penalty would have ended the extra point try.

I finally saw a replay of the try. The ball is on the ground, secured by no one when kicked into the linemen.

NF - this is definitely an illegal kick. Casebook 9.7.1A In NF it is not a LOD, as in NCAA. It wouldn't matter since the kick was not going to score, B would decline and play over.

In NCAA, it seems as it is an illegal kick as well, (2-15a), but I cannot find an AR to support this exact senario. Is in in NCAA? It would be 5 yard penalty and LOD, so no points for B, not that it mattered in the outcome. As quickly as that happened, it would be a tough one to get.

NCAA: if this happened has people say it did, you don't need any AR to cover it.
It's a foul for Illegally Kicking the Ball. The status of the ball after this remains that of a snap (i.e. backward pass).
Now if it had been flagged and I think that what the all the debate is about, the result of the penalty would be 15 yards from the basic spot and LOD.
Since this is a try down, that would mean the try is over and there would be no score against team-B (that one point safety would be wiped off).

While I agree with you about not needing an AR, it is a 5 yard penalty and LOD, not 15. It is 15 in NF, but no LOD.

Well, you made me go an pull my book of the shelf and I see 15 yards.
I think you are confusing Illegal Kick with Illegally Kicking the ball.
They are different, very different.

You are correct. In NCAA An illegal kick is a scrimmage kick beyond the NZ or using a device or material to mark the spot, or using an elevating device. 5 yards and LOD.
Illegalling kicking the ball is what may have happened here and is 15 yards and LOD.

In NF there are not 2 different kick penalties. An illegal kick and illegally kicking are both 15 yarders w/out LOD.

What if Texas had recovered the ball in the EZ? Is that a 2 pointer?

Yes.

I was told A&M had to kick off to Texas. Is that the case? and is that the way it should be for NCAA? How bout Fed? Seems to me Texas would have still kicked off as it was a try.

TXMike Mon Nov 29, 2004 07:19am

You done been lied to son. Horns kicked off.

Theisey Mon Nov 29, 2004 08:16am

NCAA does not have that crazy rule where the scored upon team can elect to kick off.
Which in case you forgot did not apply on the try down.
