A has a guard, tackle, tight end and split end on the right side of their line. The split end then shifts out wide and is on the line. After setting, the tight end then moves from the right side of the line to the left. Tight end doens't have his hand on the ground when he moves to the other side. Ruling??? What if the TE did have a hand on the ground?

If any player never had his hand on or near the ground then he is allowed to shift. If he put his hand on or near the ground, is on the LOS and has a player outside him on the LOS then he is a lineman by position and is not allowed to shift.

Hey Guys,

NFHS:
The only players restricted from shifting to a new position is an interior lineman in a 3 or 4 pt stance.

NCAA:
The only players restricted from shifting to a new position is an interior lineman in a 3 or 4 pt stance,
OR any lineman in a 3 or 4 pt stance numbered from 50 to 79.

The obvious example is if #77 lines up as an end in a 3-pt stance. He then slowly lifts his hand and moves to a new set position.
NFHS: Legal
NCAA: False start, the player was restricted by number.

Ex2: #82 lines up as an interior lineman in a 3-pt stance, he then slowly lifts his hand and moves to a new position.

BOTH: False Start, the player was restricted by position

Hope that helps
